Field note

Where Yurga Begins: XVII–XVIII Centuries

YurgaHistoryKuzbassSeries-Yurga

Yurga is older than it seems.

Before the city, before the station, before the factories — there was a small Russian settlement called Ust-Iskitim. Late XVII century. Quiet life by the Tom River, surrounded by rivers, forests, and fertile banks.

The location was convenient: water nearby, a road along the river, good land. Back then, no one could imagine that in a couple of centuries, an industrial city known throughout Kuzbass would rise here.

Yurga as a settlement began its journey right here — with a small name on a great river.

Next — about the first written mention of Yurga.
